Water - Our water footprint
Water is our most important source of life. We drink water and thus supply all our organs. But water is much more. It is the most existential and essential natural resource needed for:
Agriculture
Food production
Cooking
Hygiene
Manufacturing products
Blue and green city of the future
A lecture on the roles of water & plants in our urban habitats. On 22 March – International Water Day.
Water Consumption
Water Scarcity
Water Contamination
Water Consumption
We consume water directly and indirectly. Indirect water consumption is also called virtual water. Virtual water represents the amount of water used to produce food and products. This amount of water is indirectly contained in a product or in any kind of food.
Water is used for every food and every product we buy. Our food production has a particularly high consumption of water – measured in production, processing, transport to the packaging of the food.
Water Scarcity
From year to year we are experiencing water scarcity around the world caused by several factors:
- Population growth / Higher food production
- Irreversible water pollution
- Overuse
- Rainfall shortfalls
- Global warming
Water Contamination
Chemicals as well as human, industrial and agricultural waste are disposed of in waste water.
Anthropogenic organic trace substances are a particular problem. These chemicals are human-generated:
- Active ingredients of medicines
- Fragrances of cosmetics
- Detergents
- Plasticizers in plastics
- Material residues
- Microplastics
Additional there are contaminants from agriculture and industry, such as pesticides, surfactants or biocides. Another factor of water pollution is urbanisation. Algaecides and biocides from facades and paints, for example, get into the water through rainwater runoff, as do flame retardants from building materials.

Water
In the summer of 2021, severe storms destroyed the livelihoods of numerous people in Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia. People died in the floods.
In other regions of Germany, water shortages are reported, causing forests to die and farmers to lack the basis for supplying water to their fields. Flood and drought in one summer and in one country. naress tec develops sustainable solutions and concepts for water scarcity and for protection against flooding.
